Character InformationName: Jay Garrick
Age: 94
Fandom: DC Comics
Point In Fandom Taken From: A near future time, after his wife's death.
Brief History: Jay Garrick was the son of a WWI war hero, and his father's son. From an early age, he was taught that he should use his abilities and skills wisely and to serve others. After his father's death early on, all he had of him were memories and his father's helmet. Jay remembered the man in all he did, and entered college to push himself. He became a researcher, pursuing an advanced physics degree in motion sciences and the theoretical studies during college. Things changed when an accident caused him to inhale an experimental substance called 'heavy water'. This substance changed his body, putting it in touch with the Speed Force unknown to him, and visibly granting him superhuman speed, an aura that would protect him from heat and friction, and endurance along with the speed. In time his powers would grow, but at first he could run only to the speed of sound.
Continuing his college career, he also embarked on a career as a hero, and was labeled the Flash, and called a mystery man. The name bothered him, but he could not argue it, and knew he had to keep his identity secret... at least at that time. He eventually graduated with his PhD and started a chemicals company, and eventually met, courted, and married a woman who became his wife. All the while, he also was the Flash, entering into World War II as part of both the Justice Society of America, and the All-Star Squadron, alongside other mystery men. He formed friendships, and grew to know many of his fellow heroes.
In the Fifties, opposition to superheroes grew until most of them went into retirement, but Jay and the others eventually came back out again. The retired life was not for them. A case caused all of the JSA's lifespans to be elongated, and as late as 2009, Jay looked like a man of 45 or 50, not one approaching his centennial. He eventually revealed his identity to the world, along with several of his fellow JSA age super-heroes
He also met and helped teach his successors, Barry Allen, Wally West, and Bart Allen. These three followed him as the Flash, though at one point they all wore the red and the lightning. For Jay it was a terrific time, and he found a new lease on life.
Personality: Jay is a jovial genius at chemical composition and pharmaceutical creation. He also works with and is fascinated by nanotechnology, seeing it almost like life creation. He loves to tinker, teach, and feel as if he is useful. He is an expert at motion and speed theories and dimensional physics because of his lifetime of living with and working with the Speed Force. And he holds an obscure liking for Nuclear physics, despite now knowing it is deadly dangerous. He reads a lot, hundreds of magazines and books every week, and retains the knowledge, loving the feeling of applying or teaching that information to another. He has a researcher's mind, adept at finding information, retaining it, and adding it with other information to create a stable and accurate hypothesis.
He is a dedicated, honest. and loyal man, and to those who he protects and cherishes, he is a wind of hope. He is a patriot, almost enlisting during World War II, but feeling he could do more with his powers than as a member of the armed services. He believes in never giving up, in doing the right thing, no matter what the cost, and in making every day a good one. He also feels responsible to share his wisdom, his experience, and his knowledge, and not just rest on his laurels. He has mellowed from the original intensity of this, but still feels it. He loves his job as a hero, and loves science, and is extremely active for a man his age, and even his health.
Jay is a hard worker and a man who believes, as many of his time and era did, that the generation before has the responsibility to teach the generations after. Even though he is not overbearing, some take his wanting to give advice as condescension. He has taken to, along with other senior heroes, teaching and training the next generation of heroes as they find them. Bart Allen, before his first death, stayed with Jay and Joan for some time, and they were glad to both help teach him about life, and to give him a home.
Jay is a passionate man, but one who gives things deliberation. He strives for peace, which is not always easy to achieve, either inside yourself, or in the rest of life.
